A post for the working people virtual and real

Lately I have been thinking a lot about our society and how I am going to navigate it, as a new business owner. I have some thoughts that I'd like to share with all of you. Many of us (this includes you if you are reading this) exist in parallel universes all the time. We exist as tiny posts on FB and tweets on twitter, along with email and blogs. We work our butts off.

It is a factory job of maintaining our virtual lives, clocking in to reveal our funny or update of our personal selves, reporting for duty to twitter to sound smart or post a new deal or product, punching the time card of blogging, etsy and our web sites. Next we click away to read and study other bloggers/ FB friends/Twitter feeds/web sites. I can't leave out answering endless emails from people who have no idea that you are maintaining 5-10 other selves concurrently and need individual attention. I am a woman who also has to punch in at work, my day job-- Oh, and maintain all of the other aspects of my life, including eating, sleeping and being with my family.

So much of this new virtual life has consumed time and energy that is able to provide statistics minute by minute to show success or failure on any given day, causing me to work harder and harder just to raise a blue bar on a virtual chart. This is a world that we have created, and one that I have been negotiating the boundaries of. An existence free of sweatshop conditions but full of stresses including: knowing too much, and sometimes, not knowing when to stop.

As I spent 4 days in the country over the weekend, I had time to reflect on the conditions I have set for myself, and the ones that society has set for me. Let me just say, I'm glad I'm not alone in this dual life and cheers to those who maintain their virtual and real selves, give yourself a day off!
